Saudi National Day celebrations, traditions, and dining with Ghada Almuhanna
A special Saudi National Day Episode from The TWENTY30 Podcast.
Happy Saudi National Day! In Episode 29, The TWENTY30’s special guest contributor, Ghada Almuhanna, a visual anthropologist who is widely followed through her Instagram account documenting interesting Saudi photos and art, joins to talk all things Saudi National Day on the 94th anniversary. Saudi National Day celebrates the formal unification of the Kingdom in 1932.
Ghada joins hosts Lucien and Hanaa for a fun discussion of the evolution of National Day celebrations, how patriotism is expressed uniquely across Saudi regions, and the national holiday which is an day off for all since a royal decree in the 2015 (though national day was celebrated long before it was an official holiday.)
The conversation delves into the joyous public displays, unofficial visual competitions among companies for best National Day greetings, and the heartwarming cultural practices that come to the forefront during this national holiday.
Of course, no discussion of Saudi National Day would be complete without a discussion of Saudi food and culinary traditions that families and friends share in Saudi Arabia. That lead to the inevitable discussion and debate of dates, a staple in Saudi dining especially around big holidays — with Lucien playing observer and self-nominated arbiter of a debate between two Saudis from different regions on which region has the best dates 😂
